Shared, VPS and dedicated are all forms of server hosting. Here is a brief introduction of the three.
Dedicated server hosting - The type of hosting in which the user is provided with a server with desired specifications. The user can use the server exclusively for his/her purpose.
Shared Hosting - The type of hosting in which a server is shared by multiple users simultaneously. The resources are pooled together for each user to use.
VPS - The Virtual Private Server hosting is such that the servers are divided into virtual servers each with its own resources.
Here are some of the key comparisons between the three.
Resources
The key and primary difference among the three is the resources used by the three types of hosting. A dedicated server essentially utilizes all of its services for a single user. Whether the user uses the resources or not is up to the user.
The shared hosting provider distributes the server resources among multiple users with each user able to avail the resources at the same time.
On the other hand, in the case of VPS, the resources are divided into virtual servers. Each user gets their own Virtual Private Servers and is oblivious to other users.
Performance
Performance usually depends on the size of application you intend to use. If the application is small, essentially for testing purposes, all the three might give equal performance. However, as the size of application increases, the resources utilized also increase. In such a case, dedicated servers would provide the best performance as all the resources are dedicated to your use.
In the case of VPS, the resources are "divided" between multiple virtual servers. It has limited resources and, hence, would provide lower grade performance than dedicated.
In the case of shared hosting, however, performance is dependent on other users as the resources are shared. If some other users use the majority of the resources, your performance is degraded considerably.
Price
No prizes for guessing, dedicated servers are the most expensive as they provide you with the entire hardware and desired configuration.
Dedicated serves are followed by VPS and shared servers respectively.
Stability
Among the three, dedicated servers are the most stable. As the number of users in a server increase, the congestion leads to instability. As dedicated servers have a unique user, it is the most stable.
In the case of VPS, the resources are divided and are less stable than dedicated servers. The shared servers, however, are the least stable.
