Bandwidth is actually the speed limit at which data can be transferred between your servers and the public web.
What is Metered Bandwidth?
In a metered bandwidth connection you have access to a specific amount of bandwidth measured in GB or TB per month. If you cross your specific amount you will be charged for overage as per the company policy. For example, if you choose a package of 30TB per month, you are allowed to use 30 TB at the speed of your server port (your server port has defined the speed of data transfer).
What is Unmetered Bandwidth?
With Unmetered Bandwidth package, the amount of traffic (data) sent to and from your server during the month does not have a cap. Which means, the amount of data that is transferred does not affect your monthly billing. Customers are free to use as much bandwidth as the purchased port can handle. There is no threat of overage costs with an unmetered bandwidth plan because your usage is capped based on the port size you choose.
Yes, there is a huge difference between 1Gbps Metered and 1Gbps Unmetered bandwidth package.
In both cases, 1Gbps will be the port speed assigned to your server. However, in Metered Bandwidth page you will have to choose the cap (e.g. 30 TB or 50 TB) per month. This means that you will be allowed to transfer data up to the desired limit as per the plan is chosen. If you exceed your limit you shall be charged for overage.
On the other hand, under Unmetered Bandwidth package, you can transfer as much data as you want at the speed of your port assigned to your server. There is no cap to your usage. This package is usually called Flat-rate since the providers usually charge you flat for unlimited usage.
To answer your second question, no we do not apply any restriction on Unmetered bandwidth options. Our customers are free to use as much data transfer as they want within the limits of their port speed. We offer 1Gbps port speed with all our servers and you can choose to upgrade this up to 10Gbps.
How does billing work for Metered and Unmetered Bandwidth Packages?
At Psychz Networks, our metered bandwidth packages are billed on a Mbit scale normalized on the 95th percentile billing standard. Your billable usage is determined based upon the highest remaining usage plotted on the graph. If your usage is equal to or lower than your committed bandwidth after we've taken off the top 5%, you will not receive any additional billing. Our bandwidth system checks your server’s usage every few minutes at the port level and collects that data as a sample. This sample is stored in a database for later usage calculation. The samples are taken from the network switch port which services your equipment and is added together to provide the sampling totals. At the end of each month, the sampled throughput values, which are based on the captured samples, are all listed out and sorted from lowest to highest, and the top 5% of the readings (the highest 5% of the values) are thrown out to get the 95th percentile usage reading. Unlike some of our other billing methods, where the bill is generated based on a 30-day calendar month no matter how many days there actually are in the month, our bandwidth billing system uses true month figures, i.e. 30 days in September or 31 days in March.
For Unmetered Bandwidth packages, the pricing is simple which is a flat rate for the desired port speed that you choose for your server. There will be no cap on the amount of data you transfer in the given period of time as per your package.
