Twenty-five years ago, Red Hat was founded on March 26, 1993. On the event of its 25th anniversary, we look back at the evolution of Red Hat and its future endeavors.
When we talk about Red Hat, the first thing that comes to mind is open-source. Red Hat started as a company that provided an open-source alternative to already established software. People started taking interest in Red Hat projects mainly because of the cost-effectiveness. For small scale companies who could not afford the available software started choosing Red Hat as their preferred product.
But in a few years, customers started perceiving Red Hat as an innovation-driven company. Now. it is not just about cost-saving but also the benefits of open-source in motivating innovation.
Companies such as Facebook and Google have also introduced some of their projects an open-source as they realize that open-source attracts a loyal community and a better workforce. People have started adding open-source to their resumes as the requirement for open-source developers is increasing rapidly.
With the evolution of open-source, the evolution of Red Hat was inevitable. In an attempt to achieve new horizons and encourage innovation, Red Hat bought IT automation service Ansible in 2015. Red Hat also acquired CoreOS, a company that deals with the Kubernetes container systems.
After achieving a great deal of success in the past two decades, Red Hat decided to introduce services like OpenShift and OpenStack. These services are discussed in detail.
OpenStack
OpenStack is a cloud computing platform with its foundation being the classic Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It enables you with advanced virtualization of your resources and efficiently manages them as per your requirement. It is a unified platform for all your needs.
Some of the key features of OpenStack are discussed below.
A Co-engineered Foundation - The OpenStack is built on a co-engineered platform of OpenStack and Linux. This gives OpenStack flexibility as the compute, networking and storage services of OpenStack all function on Linux.
Cloud Security - Cloud Security is the most important concern when talking about cloud platform. OpenStack promises an advanced level of security by constantly monitoring the traffic patterns and workloads and adapting as per the current environment.
Red Hat Ceph Storage - A scalable storage solution for RedHat OpenStack that makes your infrastructure flexible and helps you manage workload efficiently. The Ceph Storage solution can make you save costs as it can scale up and down as per your requirement.
Red Hat CloudForms - A cloud management platform with automation capabilities to provide you a convenient way of managing all your services in the cloud. It helps you manage performance, capacity, utilization among others aspects.
OpenShift
OpenShift is Red Hat's container application platform that integrates both Docker and Kubernetes technology. By integrating both the technologies, Red Hat aims at reducing infrastructure costs and deploy a reliable and efficient environment. Customers can use Red Shift across multiple cloud platforms to manage applications as well as deploy applications.
The main features of OpenShift are stated below.
Security - RedShift offers built-in security for container-based applications. Some of the security features include role-based access controls, Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux)-enabled isolation, and checks throughout the container build process.
Application Modernization - RedShift offers you with a modern application platform which can help you with the development of applications in a swift manner. It also provides you with more flexibility to overcome challenges of building distributed systems with microservices.
DevOps friendly - RedShift helps developers to work on a common platform with operation teams by offering a set of tools that integrate both development and operation teams. This enables an efficient workflow for teams and eliminates any time lag.
