It is no secret that India is one of the world's largest markets for e-commerce, telecom, and IT Business and it holds the power to dictate and twist the arms of the global giant to make policies that suit our needs.
In such times, there has been a recent progress where the Lawmakers in India are working on developing a bill that would enforce cloud computing policy that will mandate data localization of the data that is related to is generated in India.
The panel is being led by Indian IT Industry Veteran, co-founder of Infosys "Kris Gopalkrishnan". He quoted "We recommend localization of cloud data and any data that is stored about Indian entities or data generated in India."
The reason for doing so is that it makes it a lot easier to gain access to data and conduct investigations if it is stored locally within the country. Many other countries like China and Russia are already following this policy. The draft report will be submitted to the information technology ministry before month-end, or at least by September 15.
Industry executives said many Indian businesses store their data on cloud servers located outside the country and a localization mandate could force them to migrate data to India. This could be a strong indication that the country and major Indian companies will be ramping up their IT infrastructure to support and cater this enormous need that will rise after this bill is passed. The Indian public cloud services market is set to more than double to $7 billion by 2022 as per the draft.
